BPA levels skyrocket after eating canned soup

Levels of the hormone-disrupting chemical BPA soared by 1,221 per cent in people who ate canned soup, a new Harvard study reveals.

“Very little has been done with cans,” lead author Dr. Jenny Carwile told the Star on Wednesday. “They haven’t been on the radar recently. Now they are.”

Canada banned Bisphenol-A in polycarbonate plastic baby bottles in 2008 and declared BPA toxic in 2010. Most major manufacturers have now replaced BPA in baby bottles and infants’ sipping cups.

EPA Moves Toward Bisphenol A Rule

The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking input on whether it should require the chemical industry to conduct toxicity tests and environmental monitoring for the plastics chemical bisphenol A (BPA). The move is part of EPA’s action plan on BPA, first announced in March 2010, to address risks presented by the controversial estrogenic chemical.   Full Article

People in the U.S. have more exposure to bisphenol A (BPA)—a chemical linked to reproductive abnormalities, certain cancers, diabetes, and heart disease—than other studied populations, according to a new report from the Canadian Medical Association.

EU bans use of controversial chemical additive in baby bottles

Manufacturers in the European Union next week will no longer be able to use a controversial chemical additive in the production of baby bottles.

The ban on bisphenol-A also covers the marketing and importation of baby bottles containing the additive as from June 1.

Manufacturers in the EU are voluntarily withdrawing baby bottles containing BPA and replacing them with other products. The voluntary action was expected to be completed by mid-year.  Full Story

Americans Twice as Contaminated With Toxic BPA As Canadians

Despite eating the same foods and using the same products that contain bisphenol A (BPA), people in the United States have twice as much of the gender-bending chemical in them than Canadians.

The finding, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, has researchers trying to determine what the deciding factor in that gap is, reports The Globe and Mail.

Maine “Little Beards” Gov LePage Hired Pro-BPA Lobbyists

Earlier this week I blogged about Maine governor Paul LePage’s recent weird comments about the chemical BPA. “The only thing that I’ve heard is if you take a plastic bottle and put it in the microwave and you heat it up, it gives off a chemical similar to estrogen,” remarked LePage, scientifically. “So the worst case is some women may have little beards.” Uh-huh.

Tempting though it may be to blame a comment this embarrassing on temprorary insanity, a great piece in the Boston Phoenix suggests otherwise. Turns out LePage has hired some lobbyists for out-of-state drug and toy industry groups to help him form his opinions on environmental and kid-safety legislation.  Full Story

FDA On BPA: It Has “Some Concern.” But Not Much.

The Food and Drug Administration finally came out with their long-awaited update on the use of Bisphenol A in food contact applications and they say…….wait a little longer. The key paragraph of the release can use some parsing: Studies employing standardized toxicity tests have thus far supported the safety of current low levels of human exposure to BPA However, on the basis of results from recent studies using novel approaches to test for subtle effects, both the National Toxicology Program at the National Institutes of Health and FDA have some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and young children. (emphasis mine) By “novel approaches”, they mean studying it at low levels, treating it like a hormone, which can have an effect at very low dosage. This should hardly be considered “novel” when they have known BPA is…

Why you should fear your sofa, baby stroller and nursing pillow

For good or ill, California often leads the nation’s social and cultural trends and legal standards. California’s passion for organic, local food, for example, has spread across the nation. When the state demanded lower vehicle emissions, manufacturers rushed to produce vehicles compliant with California’s regulations. With nearly forty million people buying consumer products in one state, manufacturers across the nation, as well as in China, tailor their specifications to meet California’s regulations. Here’s the “ill” part. In 1972, California passed legislation requiring flammability standards for upholstered furniture and baby products like high chairs, strollers and nursing pillows. Manufacturers met these new standards by using inexpensive, toxic and untested flame retardant chemicals. These flame retardants contained hazardous halogenated chemicals similar to PCB’s and Dioxins, two of the most toxic classes of chemicals, Untested in humans, these brominated and chlorinated flame retardants can cause cancer, birth defects, neurological and reproductive or endocrine…

BPA free sippy cups keep the peace

My 15 month-old son, Hunter, already seems to prefer drinking out of a regular cup, trying to be just like his mom and dad. While this may seem like a milestone, it’s rather messy and often causes major tantrums whenever we are eating out. So much so that my husband and I have resorted to hiding our drinking glasses in our laps or under the table in the hopes of avoiding said tantrums. Needless to say, I was thrilled to finally get him to drink out of his sippy cups. We tried both the Klean Kanteen and the Safe Sippy by Kid Basix. All Grown Up (+) Both sippy cups resist leaks, which is wonderful with a destructive toddler. Since both are BPA-free and stainless steel, they are nicely insulated, which is great for keeping water cold when running errands. They are easy to assemble and have few parts…
